Auburn sits on the widest, flattest floor in the valley. It is the one place we work where access is usually the easy part and the ground is the problem.
The ground in Auburn
The valley floor between the Green and White rivers is deep alluvium — soft, fine and slow to drain. It is easy digging and it will not stand a vertical wall, so trench work here is shored work.
Winter matters more in Auburn than it does on the hills. Ground that carries a truck in August turns to mud in November, and we would rather build that into the schedule than discover it on site.
Lea Hill to the east and the ground toward Algona to the west climb out of the valley onto till. Firm digging, but the approach roads are steep enough that truck size and trip count change.

- Older platted lots on ordinary town frontages. Foundation and slab removal more often than clearing.

- Hillside south of the city where the cut, not the volume, sets the price.
- West Hill and the Algona edge
- The valley's western rise. Cut lots and driveway grades that limit what can get in.
